About Us For more than 70 years, Jay B Smith Funeral Home has been your family owned funeral home, friend and neighbor, and has been privileged to serve families in the Maplewood community. The opening of the new Jay B. Smith Funeral Home Fenton Chapel, in 1995, provided the opportunity to continue the tradition of dignified and caring service, to families throughout the Fenton community. Both the Maplewood and Fenton funeral homes are large enough to accommodate any need, yet small enough to provide the dignity, personalization, and understanding that every family deserves. Our licensed directors and embalmers offer twenty-four hour availability, and have a total of more than 200 years of experience in funeral service. In 1932, Jay B. Smith and his wife Marie first established Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes when they purchased the Sarah Sutton Harrison mansion located in Maplewood, Missouri. The mansion was built in 1890. Through the years, although the mansion has been expanded and modernized several times, its beauty and charm remain. John B. Hardy joined the firm in 1948, working for the Smiths until the death of Jay B. Smith in 1956. Mr. Hardy purchased the firm and Marie Smith continued working until her retirement in 1967. Today, Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes continues to be family owned and operated by John Jay Hardy. With two convenient locations in Maplewood and Fenton, Missouri, Jay Hardy continues the dignified and trusted service that began in 1932, providing hometown values and personalized service, always at an affordable cost. Smith Funeral Homes, we offer a full range of traditional to non-traditional services, available with flexible options and affordability. We also offer Pre-Arranged Funeral Plans that are specifically designed and tailored to fit your individual needs. Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes can handle most of the cemetery arrangements. When the decision is made as to where the burial will take place, plans to acquire a cemetery lot should be made, if possible, in advance of need. We can assist you, or you can deal directly with the cemetery. If burial in a national cemetery is desired for a veteran or eligible family member Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes can make the proper arrangements. We will need the veteran's honorable discharge from military duty (DD-214). If you select above ground interment in a mausoleum, the arrangements for a crypt can be made in the same manner as a cemetery lot. When choosing a mausoleum, it is important that it be properly established and financially backed, to assure its continued maintenance into the future. If burial is to take place outside of the St. Louis area, Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes can make all the proper arrangements. We have extensive experience and affiliations in shipping across the country, and internationally. Cremation is a process for preparing the body for disposition, not a final disposition. During the cremation process, the body is reduced to small skeletal fragments by intense heat and evaporation. A final disposition then needs to be selected for these cremains, such as burial, entombment or scattering. When you select cremation, there are a number of options that can be considered. It is important to understand and recognize that cremation is only a process and not a replacement for the funeral or memorial service. If some type of traditional funeral service is desired, it can be arranged with cremation. Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes can assist you in choosing a meaningful, dignified service, and the type of memorialization that best meets you individual needs. If you are considering an anatomical donation, you should first discuss the idea with you family. These plans can only be made in advance of need by the individual directly with the school or medical facility. It is not possible for a surviving family member to make this donation for someone after their passing. The funeral home is needed to handle all paperwork, filings, and transportation. It is important to consider some type of memorial service or gathering, for surviving family and friends to allow closure and support from others. Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes can explain all options and help with the details. Monument Selection Service... Selecting a Monument or Marker is something you may do only once in your lifetime. You will be purchasing something that will last through the ages to commemorate the life of someone special. As many of the families we serve have expressed desire for assistance in this selection process, we responded by creating the "Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes Monument Selection Service". Features And Benefits Each family who orders a marker from Jay B. Smith Funeral Homes, receives a complimentary Temporary Grave Marker, so that no grave goes unmarked. We will research and document the cemetery regulations that apply to your loved one's grave. Our prices include all engraving of names, dates, designs and verses or phrases...at no additional cost. When we engrave dates, wherever possible, we include the full dates (month-day-year) not just the year...at no additional cost. On upright and slant markers we well engrave the last name on the back of the stone for ease of locating in the cemetery at no additional cost. Whether you purchase a stone from us or take our information and design to another company, we happily pledge our assistance. Monuments And Markers Military Funeral Honors Program... The Director of the Military Funeral Honors Program will coordinate the services to be provided, through your local Funeral Director. Should you desire to honor your loved one in this manner, you will be given the necessary information. What types of Military Funeral Honors are available? Depending on availability, the following honors can be rendered to a deceased veteran. Four Member Detail: Four Service Representatives will render honors, fire volleys, sound taps, fold the flag and present the flag to the next of kin. Helpful Information In most cases a life insurance company will ask for only two documents to prove a claim... A death certificate (attending physician's statement), and... A statement of claim. However, they may ask for additional information or proof if they deem it necessary. Make sure you have the following information available when filing a claim: The policy number(s) and the face amount(s) Full name and address of the deceased Deceased's occupation and date last worked Deceased's date and place of birth and source of birth information Date, place and cause of death Claimant's name, age, address and Social Security number When settling a claim, you can choose a lump sum distribution of benefit or have the benefit paid over a period of time. If a benefit is paid over time, the insurance company continues to gather interest on the amount yet to be disbursed. We suggest you consult with a qualified financial planner. . Legal Information/Probating A Will Whether or not the deceased had a will, we suggest you seek the advice of legal counsel about the disposition of your loved one's estate. If you don't already have an attorney, you can call your local bar association. Your attorney should have experience in such matter as: the disbursement or conservation of assets changing property deeds and titles disposition of bank accounts stocks and bonds business assets Wills have to be probated. That means the estate will be legally divided in an orderly procedure as outlined in the will. Most of the time, it is a simple process. If the deceased had extensive holdings or the will is being contested, the procedure may become more complicated. If there is no will, the estate will be divided according to state law. This may or may not be the way the estate was intended to be distributed by the deceased. Checklist Of Things To Do Immediately following death, a whirlwind of activity must take place. To help you through the confusion, we have prepared a simple checklist of things to do. Obtain copies of Death Certificate Make copies of newspaper articles Check contents of safe deposit box Make copies of marriage certificate Compile list of heirs, next of kin, beneficiaries Locate military records File for life insurance benefits File for employer benefits Check health insurance continuation Pre-Arrange your services Transfer car title into your name Make copies of dated obituary notice Obtain Certificates of Appointment Review will with attorney and proceed with filing Make copies of birth certificates (yours and deceased's) Assemble life insurance policies File for Social Security and Veterans benefits File for Fraternal, Union and Association benefits Contact Creditors Review your will Establish credit in your name Review life insurance policy beneficiaries Understanding Grief... Grief is the result of intense emotional suffering that is caused by loss and acute sorrow. Grieving is the normal process by which we respond to the losses sustained in life. Grieving helps us adjust and begin moving on with our own life. Listed below are recognized stages of grief. Shock Panic Guilt Silence Recovery Denial Anger Depression Tears Acceptance SHOCK...is nature's way of insulating and cushioning us when we suffer a loss. There may be odd feelings, no appetite, and irrational thoughts. Physical symptoms may be trembling hands, loss of voice, stomach ulcer, headaches, faint or weak feelings. Shock should begin to wear off in hours...days weeks. to comfort someone suffering emotional shock, just being their friend, holding their hand, and helping with chores will help them get through this difficult time. PANIC...can be the first reaction to death, or it might be a secondary reaction that occurs days, even weeks later. The inability to focus your attention effectively, and forgetfulness are normal. Be assured you will make it through this difficult time. Panic tends to pass quickly. If it persists, professional help is advised. GUILT...can be actual or real. Feelings of guilt and regret are normal, and can be worked out by talking with close friends, family members, clergymen and women, as well as through your own intellectual and spiritual studies. To comfort someone who is experiencing guilt, let them express their feelings, and be a good listener without judging them. SILENCE...is a normal reaction to grief. A grieving person might go through activities without saying anything or acknowledging anyone. They might be very solemn, struggling with their own emotions. They may need time to think things through without being disturbed or interrupted. During this time, it may be helpful for a family member or friend to assist us in expressing needs, help with chores, food, and transportation. RECOVERY...the funeral service helps us to understand the reality of death. It represents a specific time set aside for the expression of our love, respect, memories, and grief. The funeral provides a structure for the early days of grieving. During the recovery process, the engraved monument can help you visualize your respect. Visiting the grave can also be a meaningful, personal time for your recovery. DENIAL...is a refusal to believe or accept the loss. The depth of denial is based on the degree you feel you need your loved one alive. Denial may remain for months or years, and there is no set time for getting rid of it. Some people might stay away from the grave, while others may leave the deceased's room unchanged for quite awhile. Do what feels right for you. Keeping a few pictures and other treasures in view indefinitely is not denial. Special memories are an affirmation of love. ANGER...is a normal response. You might experience it in any degree from mild to raging, depending on your personality and the circumstances. You might feel God has let you down, or that your spouse or friends have let you down. Anger needs to be expressed in positive ways...possibly through exercise, or maybe just screaming in the wind. Bottling up anger causes stress. Anger may come and go, however, if it seems destructive or prolonged, consider professional help. DEPRESSION...may be a long process, but healing will come. Just getting out of bed is difficult...conversations, shopping and other chores are exhausting. It may be helpful for a friend to listen and not judge. Outside activities and other interests can provide a helpful diversion for mind and body. Professional counseling can temporarily assist you in coping with the new reality. Most people recover slowly, but surely TEARS...can be helpful, and can be a necessary release for expressing grief and sorrow. If tears are repressed and not allowed to flow freely, psychological harm and physical illness might result. ACCEPTANCE...accepting the death of someone close to us is a long process. Total acceptance might not come for months, even years. Slowly, we will experience greater strength to accept our loss. If there are extreme behavior swings or depression you should seek professional help. A good sign of acceptance is when you begin to talk freely about the deceased, recalling fond memories and events, and giving more freedom to your emotions. Prices...
