Samuel Franklin Harned
August 7, 1957-October 21, 2026


It is with heavy hearts that the family of Samuel Harned announces his passing at the age of 69 on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. He leaves behind a community who will always cherish his humor and wisdom.

As a beloved history teacher, Sam earned admiration from his students and peers. He was endearingly "old school," preferring a chalkboard to a smartboard. He delivered passionate lectures which never failed to light up his pupil's days.

After retirement, Sam continued his mission as a literacy volunteer and lecturer. He always balanced a good natured spirit with a passion to excel, which was felt on courts, in classrooms, and throughout his volunteer work. Sam would make you laugh as he beat you 11-0 in pickleball.

Sam loved reading, often working through more than one hundred books in a year. He enjoyed classic literature with coffee in the morning, and would pour through histories to prepare for his classes. Sam thought books were beautiful in every possible way, from the words inside to the way they filled his home.

More than anything else, Sam found joy in his family. He never missed his children's sports games or recitals and helped build the best life possible for them. Sam will be remembered as a caring father, grandfather, teacher, and lifelong learner.

He is survived by his wife, Meaghan Harned; his children, Madeline Harned, Jackson Harned, Charlie Harned, Billy Harned, and Joe Harned; and three granddaughters.
