David Surkamp Obituary

October 14 2026

David Surkamp, beloved father, grandfather, friend, and the unmistakable voice of Pavlov's Dog, has passed away, leaving a lifetime of music and a family who will carry his memory forward.

A defining figure in St. Louis music, David built a career that reached listeners around the world. As a founding member, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of Pavlov's Dog, he helped create a sound that was entirely its own. His soaring voice and deeply expressive songwriting gave the band an enduring place in progressive rock. The landmark albums Pampered Menial (1975) and At the Sound of the Bell(1976), along with songs such as "Julia," "Late November," and "Of Once and Future Kings," continue to connect generations of listeners.

David's creative journey extended beyond Pavlov's Dog. He joined forces with Iain Matthews in Hi-Fi, explored his own musical voice through solo work, and later brought Pavlov's Dog back to international stages. His career spanned more than five decades, with devoted audiences across Europe and beyond. Through later recordings including Echo & Boo, Prodigal Dreamer, and Wonderlust, released in 2025, he continued adding to the body of music that will remain his lasting gift to the world.

At the heart of David's life was his beloved wife, Sara, who passed away in 2025. Their love was inseparable, a bond woven through their family, their music, and the life they built together. Sara shared his life and his stage, performing alongside him and becoming part of the musical story they created together. Those who love them take comfort in knowing that David will once again be with Sara, reunited with the woman whose heart was so closely bound to his own.

David is survived by his daughter, Saylor; his son, Evan; his daughter-in-law, Emma; and his cherished grandchildren, Etta, Ella, Edison, and Emilia. They will carry his memory and spirit forward in their own lives and in the stories they share.

He also leaves behind dear friends, fellow musicians, and fans whose lives were touched by his music. His legacy lives in those relationships, in his family, and in the extraordinary songs that will continue to be discovered, played, and loved.

David's voice was unmistakable. His absence will be deeply felt. And whenever his music plays, something of him will be with us again.

A celebration of life will be announced by the family in the coming weeks.
