Obituary

Raymond Francis Pennington of St. Louis, Missouri passed away on October 18th, 2017 at the age of 88 due to an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease. Raymond was born on January 21st, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri to Stephen and Vera Pennington. He was the second of five children. His home was just down the street from Grady Ball factory, where baseballs were stitched for professional teams. Often the children begged for the workers to toss a ball out of the window. Occasionally they were rewarded for their persistence and would catch the ball as it fell to the sidewalk. At age 14, Raymond left school to work full-time in order to help support his parents and siblings, sacrificing his dream to become a draftsman. Throughout his adulthood, he always worked hard in order to be able to provide for his wife and son. Work was an important source of pride for Raymond and he worked several places but was most proud of his work at the Air National Guard, where he received several safety awards, praising his work ethic and dedication to the company. He enjoyed reading and, by extension, taught himself all kinds of skills, gardening, wiring, fishing and tying lures. He met Jane Lewis at Famous Barr May Company Spring Avenue Warehouse, she as an employee and he as the youngest delivery driver for the company, a job which paid $36 per week. They married on December 12th, 1959 in Maplewood, Missouri and were married for 58 years. Raymond is survived by one son, John, and his wife, Amy. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Jane Pennington, in August of 2017, his parents and siblings, Louise Ellebrecht, Ella Remspecher, Gene and Don Pennington. Raymond elected to donate his body to SLU Medical Hospital in order to assist future medical professionals. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
