Obituary

Otto Lickenbrock of St. Louis, Missouri, aged 92, touched the lives of many with his humor, love of family, and ability to fix darn near anything. Surrounded by three generations of family, he passed painlessly on June 16, 2024 after a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. Otto was born on January 12, 1932 in St. Libory, Illinois to Joseph and Clara (nee Mense) Lickenbrock. The sixth of seven rambunctious children: Rosemary (Wesselman), Robert, Ann (Juenger), Edward, John, and Hugo. They started out working and playing hard on the farm and all stayed close throughout the years until they preceded him in passing. In 1955, Otto married Elgene (nee Sauerwein). For nearly 70 years, they traveled this life together. Otto never failed to give Elgene's hand a little squeeze each night as he went to bed to make sure each was safe during life's many challenges and adventures. Otto and Elgene were blessed with three children Jeffrey (Cathy), Carol (John Austin), and Bradley (Heather) Lickenbrock, grandchildren: Julie (Dima) Martynyuk, Brian Lickenbrock, Hiroshi (Ariel) Fujii, Ashley Blumer, Jack Austin, and Charlotte Lickenbrock, and two great-grandchildren Emma and Alice Martynyuk. During his time in the Air Force, Otto took every course he could and developed a lifelong love of airplanes and education. In the middle of conversations his eyes would often stray to the sky to identify this plane or that. He is a Parks College alumnus. He worked at McDonnell Douglas for many years and retired as the director of Australian operations in 1991. He was a member of the Boeing Sages and a seventy-year member of the American Legion Post 683. He took his own children on many road trips showing them the wonders of the United States while regaling them with many tall tails. Over his thirty-year retirement, he helped all his grandchildren to catch their first fish and thrilled them with rides in a wagon behind a John Deere rider mower at the lake house he built with friends and brothers. He could often be found tinkering with this or that machine in the garage. Above all, Otto loved his family. Visitation will be held at Immacolata Church at 8900 Clayton Road in Clayton on Wednesday, June 26 beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Jefferson Barracks followed by a celebration of life at Royale Orleans. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Immacolata St. Vincent DePaul Society in which Otto and Elgene were active for many years.
