Obituary

Ottis Elmo Newman of Villa Ridge, born October 12, 1920 in Leeper, Mo., son of the late Harry Newman and wife, Lura (Church) passed away September 11, 2011 in Fenton, MO. at the age of 90. Educated in Piedmont, Mo., he worked at Carter Carburetor until he enlisted in the army on January 17, 1942. He served in the Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley battles and campaigns with the 346th Fighter Squadron as a Jug Crew Chief. Ottis was awarded 6 bronze stars. He received an honorable discharge on September 9, 1945 and returned to Carter Carburetor where he met his future wife, Gertrude Wray (Vogel). On August 24, 1946, Ottis was united in marriage to Gertrude in Kansas City, MO. They made their home in St. Louis. Ottis was a Master Mason in Villa Ridge, Mo. Ottis was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Sertl, and his wife, Gertrude. Mr. Newman is survived by his two children, Gary (Christine) Newman of St. Charles, Carol(Thomas) Haynie of Fenton and son-in-law, Glen Sertl of Annapolis; eleven Grandchildren, twenty four Great-grandchildren, four Great-great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. Visitation will be held at Jay B. Smith Funeral Home, 777 Oakwood Dr, in Fenton from 4-8 pm on Friday, September 16 with service at 7 pm. Burial will be on Saturday, September 17 at 10 am at the Masonic Cemetery in Piedmont, Mo. Memorials preferred to SSM Hospice.
