Obituary

Larry Gene Tate, age 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7th at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on April 25, 1940, he was the son of Arthur and Mary (Bryant) Tate. He was born and raised in St. Louis and graduated from Pattonville High School. He then attended and graduated from Truman University and went on to receive his Master's degree from Webster University. Larry met the love of his life, Patricia Ellis, while at Truman University. They were married on September 2, 1961. They were married for 61 years. She passed away in June of 2023. Larry was a science teacher for over 30 years in the Lindbergh School District. He spent one year as an exchange teacher in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His pride and joy was the Outdoor Adventure Club he started while at Lindbergh High School. He took students rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, spelunking and on summer trips backpacking in Colorado. He retired from teaching at age 55 and truly enjoyed his golden years. He enjoyed spending his time going to the gym, bicycling, running, hiking, and backpacking. He completed several triathlons and took a bike ride across Alaska. He especially enjoyed many vacations and dinners with his "Bridge Club" group of friends from college. Larry also spent many of his retirement years doing volunteer work with his wife at Feed My People, a local food pantry. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Patricia Tate and his sisters, Mary Jo McCoubrie, Shirley Ray and a twin sister, Jane, who died in infancy. Larry is survived by his children, Lori (Larry) Dejno, Brian (Michele) Tate and Michael Tate; grandchildren, Katelyn Dejno, David (Kayla) Dejno, Jordan (Carmen) Dejno, Kelsey (Jordan) Littel, Jonathan Tate, Brittany Tate; greatgrandchildren, Indigo Dejno, Zara Dejno, Beckham Dejno, Asa Dejno and one due to be born in October. Also surviving are his brothers, Wes Tate and Bryant Tate and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospital staff, especially nurse Rosie, for their compassionate care of Larry during his final days. Special thanks also to the Riverchase YMCA staff for their kindness to Larry this past year after the passing of his wife. He loved his "volunteer" work there. Donations in memorial appreciated to Feed My People, 3295 Ottomeyer Road, High Ridge, MO 63049.
