John Ross Truman Grandnephew of President Harry S. Truman John Ross Truman, 77, St. Louis, Missouri died May 21, 2018 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Truman was President Harry S. Truman's grandnephew. The President's only brother, J. Vivian Truman, was his grandfather. He grew up in Independence, Missouri, one mile from the President's home. For over six years Mr. Truman studied to be a priest with the Jesuits, whom he always held in high esteem. He graduated magna cum laude from St. Louis University and earned a law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. During his four years of service as an Army Captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, he represented Captain Ernest Medina in a My Lai massacre case. He also practiced law with famed defense attorney F. Lee Bailey in Boston before practicing labor and employment law in St. Louis. John Ross Truman represented the Truman family at the September 2000 dedication of the U.S. Department of State headquarters as the Harry S. Truman Building. He joined President Bill Clinton in speaking at the dedication, and he was the guest of honor of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright at the official state department dinner held for the occasion. Mr. Truman also joined Sir Winston Churchill's daughter and granddaughter in commemorating the 60th anniversary of Churchill's Iron Curtain speech. In 2010 Mr. Truman presented an hour-long public program of memories of his Uncle Harry at the Truman Presidential Library. His survivors include his wife, Linda Stansell Truman, two sons, John Tyler and Tim Truman, of Independence, Missouri, a step-daughter, Laura J. Wende (Randall) of St. Louis, Missouri and a step-grandson, Logan M. Wende of Washington, D.C. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on May 25 at 1PM. A memorial mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church on June 7 at 10AM. Friends and family may gather in the church vestibule at 9AM.
