Obituary

John Herbert Peters, 47, passed away on Thursday, August 2nd, 2018, in the comfort of his home, after a very short battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma. He is survived by his wife, Melissa (Van Slyke) Peters, of 22 years, and his children, Mitchell Peters and Lydia Peters. Others grateful for having shared life with John are John's Mother, Miriam Peters of Cedar Rapids, IA; Bill and Belinha Hampton, Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law, of Cedar Rapids, IA; Jill Peters, Step-Mother, of Branson, MO; Half-Brother Tony (Holly) Peters of Seattle, WA. and Steve (Judy) Peters of Hartley, IA and Step-Brother Brian Daugherty, of Omaha, NE; Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews, many Cousins, and countless friends. John was preceded in death by his Father, Herb Peters; Grandparents, Clarence and Esther Smith, Grandma Edith, and Hans and Christine Peters; Half-Sister Teri Peters Gruenig and Godfather/Cousin Scot Peters. John was born on July 7, 1971 in Worthington, MN, to parents Miriam (nee Smith) Peters and H. Herb Peters. John grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA and attended Linn-Mar Schools. He attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance. John began his career with Archer Daniels Midland as a Grain Merchandiser in Valdosta, GA. In 1999, he went to work for the now Nestle Purina Pet Care, with locations in Davenport, IA and Dunkirk, NY. In 2003, John and his family moved to the St. Louis, Mo location, where he worked in the Procurement of Raw Materials for cat and dog food. He has been employed with the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company for 19 years at the time of his passing. He was a very dedicated employee and loved his work. John thoroughly enjoyed time with his family, and had been so very proud of his children. He could be seen attending practices and games, and cheering them on at each activity they were involved in. John and Melissa were nearly inseparable, and had known each other since preschool in Cedar Rapids, Ia. John will always be remembered as a kind, honest, hard-working, fun-loving man. His faith never wavered throughout his journey with cancer. He would always look for the blessing in a message that was to be delivered as a negative. As John said on June 25th, "We have to take what we are given with grace and acceptance. Nothing is promised or given freely. It just isn't. I don't know how else to say it". He and his family have been so grateful for the support and encouragement of other family members and friends. John will be greatly missed. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, if desired.
