Helen was born Aug. 29, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland
Wife of the late Barney Beck, mother of James Beck, Sue Beck and Barb Schekorra. Grandmother of Michael, Earl Jr. Christine, Jamie, Brian and Angie Beck, Melissa Keeney, Chris and Daniel Schekorra. Great grandmother to 15
Helen came from a family of 12 kids. 2 of whom died at very young ages. Her mother Mae, passed away January 1, 1973. Her dad, Daniel Wolf passed away when she was 9 years old. Her family struggled sometimes to have enough food to feed everyone.
Helen's mother Mae would still make bread and potato soup to help feed neighbor kids that were worse off than they were. After high school, Helen moved to Washington D.C. to help her aunt and uncle.
Helen's uncle knew a lot of people and helped her get a job at the Naval Gun factory working as a secretery. That is where she met our father Barney.
Barney was in the Marine Corps. at the time and he was on guard duty at the Naval Gun factory. In 1952 Barney resigned from the service and moved back home. 2 weeks later Helen moved to St. Louis to marry Barney. They were married 2 months later on November 22, 1952. They had a son Jim in July of 1954 and were residing in Richmond Heights. Their daughter Sue was born in Aug. 1955. Barbara, their youngest daughter was born Apr. 21, 1960.
Over the years, Helen had different jobs to help out the family. Barney was working at Cupples Products until he retired. Barney and Helen both helped out at church. Barney helped out with the sports teams and mom helped out in Sunday School. After dad retired, mom and dad would watch Cardinal baseball games on tv together.
Over the years, time went by and we would come back and visit with mom and dad. Dad passed away in Dec. of 2019. You could tell mom missed him. You know the old saying "you don't know what you got till it's gone" Well, it's true.
There is an empty spot in our hearts for both mom and dad. Cherish your mom and dad while you have them. Thank God that he gave you parents to love you through all of the stupid things you have done. Cherish your mom and dad.
We miss you mom. Say hi to dad for us.
Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 8th from 4-8pm at Jay B Smith Funeral Homes, 7456 Manchester Rd., Maplewood, Mo. 63143. Services Tues. Dec. 9th, 9:30 at Jay B Smith with interment at 11am at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
