Obituary

Ernest Leroy Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by his entire family on Tuesday January 23, 2018, at the age of 71 years. Ernie will be lovingly remembered by Barbara, his wife and best friend of 48 years, and their children, Dave (Tiffany), Melissa (Casey) Kalaher, Jason (Carrie), Todd (Sarah), and Scott (Rachel). Ernie will also be fondly remembered by his 10 grandchildren, Devin, Dominick, Gavin, Matthew, Sofia, Tyler, Scotty, Owen, Evelynn, Matilyn; by his siblings, Rick, Linda (Don) Kelley, and Lloyd (Carol), by his sister in law Peggy Wright and many other nieces and nephews. Ernie was predeceased by his parents John D. Smith and Doris J. Smith. Ernie was born in St. Louis, MO in 1946 to John and Doris Smith. At the age of 12 his family moved to Rolla where he worked at the local general store with his father. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America and Boy Scouts of America. He spent summers bailing hay on his grandfather's farm and fishing with his brothers. The night of his high school graduation Ernie joined the Air Force during the height of the Vietnam War. Although he wanted to join the fight on the front lines, Ernie was stationed at a remote Air Force base in the Aleutian Islands. After the Air Force he learned the Tool and Die trade. Ernie and Barb met at Fulton Iron Works. They were married in 1970 and started a family four years later. Ernie was very active in the church and served as Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus. When Ernie wasn't working on a home improvement project, he coached youth soccer and helped with the Boy Scouts. Their home and their hearts were always open to friends and family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. Ernie and Barb loved traveling to see their children and grandchildren and going to Jekyll Island. His canine companion "Maggie" was never too far behind. You could find him fishing from the dock or swinging in the hammock by the water. Ernie was a devoted husband and loving father who knew that seeing your children grow up to be happy and successful is the best reward. He was a special man. He is loved and will be missed. Visitation will take place on Sunday January 28th, 2018 from 4pm – 8pm with a military honors ceremony commencing at 7pm.
