Evans, Dorothy Jane (neeDunning) died September 15, 2010 at Bethesda Dilworth in Oakland, MO, where she lived for nearly three years. She was born April 23, 1919 in Chicago to William B. and Ellen Dunning. She wed William P. Evans in St. Louis on Oct. 31, 1942 when he was on a short leave from Scott Air Force Base during World War II. He later served the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre (Burma). Mr. Evans was a longtime teacher at Normandy High School and together they raised four children. He died on March 27, 1994. Devoted mother of Julia C. Wood (Thomas C.) of Chesterfield, MO, Rosemary Hensley (the late Larry) of Rock Hill, MO, Theresa Jones (the late Christopher) of Athens, GA and William P. Evans III (Diana) of San Francisco; Beloved grandmother of Thomas C. Wood, Jr. (special friend Stacy Hilliard) of Independence, MO, Ellen Wood Kraichely (Joseph) of Kirkwood, Jennifer Hensley Gomez (Ronald) of St. Louis, and Nancy Jones Hodges (Thomas) of Atlanta; Dear great-grandmother of Kyle, Ryan and Tyler Kraichely of Mason, OH, Sara and Morgan Wood of Independence, MO, and Leo Gomez of St. Louis; Loving former grandmother-in-law of Stacy Wood of Blue Springs, MO; Also loved by Carey Winzurk of Athens, GA (special friend of Theresa). She grew up in Chicago, graduated from Evanston, IL high school, and attended Northwestern University in Chicago and Washington University (St. Louis). She worked at Barnes Hospital before being married. For more than 50 years, the family lived in Richmond Heights, where she enjoyed an active social life. She was an avid Bridge player, bowler and gardener, and was a member of the Richmond Heights Garden Club and St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Richmond Heights. She volunteered at Richmond Heights Meals on Wheels, and was active with the Richmond Heights Senior Citizens. She was a good friend to many, known for a wry sense of humor and positive attitude. Her family and friends remember her as a wonderful mother and hostess, seamstress, gardener and cook. She also had the grace to accept life as it came. She will be dearly missed by a host of family and friends. A memorial service and reception will be held in the chapel at Bethesda Dilworth at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20.
